April 17, 2006 Building on its reputationj as having the most environmentally friendly locomotive flee in theUnited States, Unioj Pacific today announced it is testing technologies to reduc e diesel engine emissions in olded railroad locomotives. Through collaboration with staff at the Nationakl Vehicle and Fuel Emissions Laboratory ofthe U.S. Environmentakl Protection Agency (EPA) from Ann Mich., Union Pacific is providing a 3,800-horsepowere SD60M locomotive built inJanuaru 1992, to serve as the firstg freight locomotive in North America to be equippes with a set of oxidatio catalyst or "oxicat" devices manufactured by the MIRATECH Corporation of Okla.
These devices serve as flow-througgh catalytic converters. As the diesell engine's exhaust flows through theswe converters, microscopic particles known as "particulate matter"" generated by the diesep combustion process will be converted into wate r andcarbon dioxide. In a similar experiment, a 1,500-horsepowerd yard switching locomotive built in November also provided byUnion Pacific, will be retrofittecd with a diesel particulate filter or "DPF.
