Midland Memorial Hospital has become the 12th hospital to join the Texaz CordBlood Bank, a divisiob of the in San Antonio. The Texas Legislature created the Texax Cord Blood Bank in 2001 to collect bloofd from the discarded umbilical cords of healthynewborb babies. This blood is rich in blood-makin stem cells that can be used as an alternative to bone marroqw transplants to treat cancers such as leukemizand lymphoma, sickle-cell anemia and immune-systek disorders. Methodist Hospital in San Antonio became the firsyt official collection site in the statein 2005. Doctorsx at Midland Memorial will now begin collecting the umbilicalkcord blood.
“The benefit potentialk of cord bloodon people’es lives was very importanf in our decision to partner with Texazs Cord Blood Bank,” says Robert Dent, vice presidentr of nursing at Midland Memorial “This will make a difference in people’s Dr. Norman D. president, CEO and medical director for the South TexaswBlood & Tissue Center, says this partnership also has the potentia l of creating a diversity of cord blood unitsz in the state.
